How it works

Air In Low, Air Out High

Your house makes moisture all day. Showers, laundry, cooking, and it all rises. What happens to it after that is decided by two openings at opposite ends of your roof.

  1. Moisture rises out of the house

    Showers, laundry, and cooking put water vapour into the air all day, and it moves up into the attic whether you want it there or not.

  2. Cool air is drawn in at the soffits

    Vented soffit along the eaves is the intake. This is the half most homeowners have never had a contractor mention, and the half that is usually blocked.

  3. It picks up heat and moisture on the way up

    The air warms as it crosses the underside of the deck, carrying attic heat and household moisture with it.

  4. It leaves at the ridge

    A vent running the peak is the exhaust. That completes the circuit, and the attic stays close to the temperature outside.

The part nobody explains

More Exhaust Than Intake Does Not Help

Most homeowners assume more vents means better ventilation. It does not. If the soffits are blocked or solid, a ridge vent cannot pull air from outside, so it pulls conditioned air out of your living space instead and drags household moisture up into the attic with it.

Adding exhaust to an attic that cannot take air in makes the problem worse, not better. The two halves have to match, and the honest rule is the one that holds in every jurisdiction: at least as much intake as exhaust. That is why the first thing we do on a roof is measure both ends, before anything gets priced.

Two halves, and each one can be right or wrong independently of the other. Most of the attics we open have one good end and one blocked one.

What works

  • Continuous vented soffit running the full length of the eave.
  • A baffle in every rafter bay, holding the air channel open where insulation would otherwise block it.

What does not

  • Solid soffit with no perforation, so there is no path for air to enter at all.
  • Vents painted shut, blocked by debris, or buried under blown insulation.

Exhaust

Air out, high at the ridge

What works

  • One continuous vent running the full length of the ridge.
  • A slot cut end to end through the decking underneath it, capped with matching shingles.

What does not

  • One or two box vents doing the work of a full ridge line on a ridge long enough to take one.
  • Gable vents left open after a ridge vent goes on, which short-circuits the airflow.

Box vents and turtle vents are not the problem

On a hip roof with a short ridge they are often the right answer, because there is not enough ridge to run a continuous vent along. Where the ridge is long enough, continuous moves more air than intermittent, and one or two box vents on a long ridge is a question of being undersized, not of being the wrong hardware. What matters is how much exhaust the attic actually has against how much intake feeds it.

A Ridge Vent Only Works If the Roof Is Open Underneath It

Ventilation is installed work, not a part you buy off a shelf. A shingle-over ridge vent is three things: a cut, a vent, and a cap. The first one is the one that gets skipped.

  1. Cut the ridge open

    A continuous slot goes through the decking along the entire peak. That opening is what actually lets the attic exhaust, and it is the step that gets skipped.

  2. Install the vent

    A low-profile vent runs the full length of the ridge, nailed down and baffled so wind-driven rain and snow cannot get back in.

  3. Cap it with shingles

    Matching cap shingles cover the vent. From the ground you would never know it is there, and the attic is breathing.

How to check your own

Some crews nail ridge vent down without cutting the slot underneath, or cut it short of the ends. It looks finished from the street and vents almost nothing. From inside the attic on a bright day you can usually see daylight along the peak if the slot is really there. An old aluminium ridge vent is easier still: it announces itself from the street, it dents, and the seams leak. A shingle-over vent disappears into the roofline and moves more air.

Three Ways an Unvented Attic Takes Years Off a Roof

Trapped heat ages asphalt from the back side, where the sun never reaches. A roof in a hot attic gives up years it was supposed to have, and it does it quietly.

The deck rots

Warm moist air hits the cold underside of the sheathing and condenses there. Do that through enough winters and the wood your shingles are nailed to stops holding a nail.

The warranty goes away

Most manufacturer warranties are void if the ventilation is undersized for the roof. A new roof on a blocked attic can be the most expensive uncovered roof on the street.

How does attic ventilation actually work?

Why does bad ventilation ruin a roof?

Are box vents or turtle vents bad?

Do you have to close gable vents when you install a ridge vent?

Usually yes, and it is standard practice. A ridge vent pulls the easiest air it can find, and open gable vents are easier than soffits. Left open, the ridge short-circuits through the gables and the lower two thirds of the attic gets almost no airflow. Blocking them is what forces the air to come up from the eaves, which is the whole point.
