Fascia, Soffit & Trim in Northern Virginia & Maryland
Your Gutters Are Nailed Into It
We replace rotted and storm-damaged trim while the roof or the gutters are already open. Vented soffit is also half of what lets your attic breathe, so this is rarely only a cosmetic job.

The parts
Fascia, Soffit, and Which Is Which
Fascia
The vertical board running along the edge of the roof, and the one your gutters are fastened to. It takes the weight of a full gutter and everything in it, which is why gutters pulling away from a house is usually a fascia problem rather than a gutter problem.
Soffit
The horizontal underside between that board and the wall, the part you see standing under the eave looking up. On a properly built house it is perforated, because this is where the attic draws its air in.
Why it is not just trim
Soffit Is Where Your Attic Breathes In
A roof vents by pulling cool air in low at the eaves and pushing hot, moist air out high at the ridge. The soffit is the low end of that. Solid soffit with no perforation, soffit painted shut over years of repaints, or soffit buried under blown insulation all close the intake, and an attic that cannot take air in cooks the shingles from underneath and rots the deck above it.
That is why we look at soffit as ventilation hardware and not as trim. More on how attic ventilation works, including why adding vents at the ridge does not help when the eaves are blocked.
The process
How Fascia and Soffit Work Gets Done
Four steps, and the second one is the one other contractors skip.
Find how far the rot actually goes
Soft fascia is usually wetter than it looks, and the damage often runs past the board into the rafter tails behind it. We press the length of the run and check from inside the attic before quoting a board count.
Check what the soffit is doing for the attic
Whether it is vented at all, whether the perforation has been painted over, and whether insulation has been pushed out over the top of it. This is the step that turns a trim job into a ventilation fix, and it is the reason we are up there.
Replace the wood and the trim
Rotted fascia and rafter tails come off and go back as sound material. Gutters come down for access and are re-hung if they have life left, and we tell you before we start if they do not.
Put the intake back
Continuous vented soffit along the full eave, with a baffle in each rafter bay where insulation would otherwise block the channel. The attic ends the job able to take air in.
Scope
When We Take This Work
We do fascia, soffit and trim as part of a roof, gutter or siding job, when the access already exists and the pricing makes sense for both of us. A standalone trim repair on a house we are not otherwise working on is usually somebody else's job, and we would rather say that on the phone than after a visit.
After a storm, this belongs on the same claim
Wind that lifts shingles tears at trim on the way past, and hail that bruises a roof marks aluminum fascia and soffit too. Most homeowners leave that money on the table because their roofer only looked up. We document the whole exterior at once, so it goes on one claim instead of becoming a second job you pay for yourself. See how we handle roof insurance claims and storm damage repair.

Questions
Fascia and Soffit Questions, Answered
What is the difference between fascia and soffit?
Fascia is the vertical board running along the edge of the roof, the one your gutters are fastened to. Soffit is the horizontal underside between that board and the wall, the part you see when you stand under the eave and look up. Fascia carries the gutter. Soffit is where the attic takes air in.
How do I know if my fascia is rotted?
Gutters pulling away from the house is the most common sign, because the fasteners are holding into wood that has gone soft. Peeling paint that keeps coming back, dark staining along the roof edge, and visible gaps between the gutter and the board are the others. Press it: sound fascia is firm, rotted fascia gives.
Why does soffit matter for my roof?
Because vented soffit is the intake half of your attic ventilation, and without it the exhaust at the ridge has nothing to pull. Solid soffit, soffit painted shut, or soffit buried behind insulation all stop air entering at the eave, and an attic that cannot take air in cooks the shingles from underneath and rots the deck. See our attic ventilation page for how the two halves work together.
Can you replace fascia without replacing the gutters?
Usually the gutters have to come down to get at the board, and whether they go back up depends on their condition. If they are sound we re-hang them. If they are at the end of their life, taking them down twice makes no sense and we will say so before we start rather than after.
Is fascia and soffit work covered by insurance after a storm?
It can be, and it is one of the most commonly missed parts of a claim. Wind that lifts shingles also tears at trim, and hail that bruises a roof marks aluminum fascia and soffit too. Most homeowners leave that money on the table because their roofer only looked up. We document the whole exterior on one claim.
Do you do fascia and trim work on its own?
We take it as part of a roof, gutter, or siding job, which is when the access already exists and the pricing makes sense for both of us. A standalone trim repair on a house we are not otherwise working on is usually somebody else's job, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than after a visit.
Gutters Pulling Away From the House?
That is usually the board behind them rather than the gutters. The inspection is free, it includes the attic, and you get it in writing the same day.
Crews Monday to Saturday. Office phones Monday to Friday.
